A few weeks ago, it was safe to assume that this reel might contain an interview with the Houston chapter of the Guardian Angels, citizens who patrolled the streets and subways in the 80s wearing red berets.
Actually, this reel preserved something much more fun. From 1978-1980, Houston had its own Women’s Professional Basketball League team called the Houston Angels. Interestingly enough, former Rice Owls Men’s Basketball Coach Don Knodel helmed the women’s team, which won the championship for the 1978-1979 season.
Team owner, Hugh Sweeney decided to recruit a cheerleading squad for his team . . . an all-male squad. Thus, the Guardian Angels were the male cheerleaders rooting for the women’s team.
This segment from “Up in the Air” from February 14, 1979 features Mary Kay Zuravleff interviewing Jim Anderson and Herb Meekins [sp?] about their experience supporting the Houston Angels.
