On July 29, 1974, KTRU’s Bruce Kessler and Ben Cobb conducted an interview with Mike Love of the Beach Boys the day after a stadium concert opening up for Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young on their “Doom Tour“.
Before listening, please keep in mind that:
a) Mike Love not only mumbled through the interview, but wasn’t close to the microphone. We’ve had to digitally enhance his audio.
b) There are not always questions, but sometimes just Love’s responses, which don’t always make sense.
c) We have gathered all of the snippets into one audio file with breaks between each bit. The creators sprinkled these throughout the original recording in between the Beach Boys concert set.
For the majority of the interview, Love discusses transcendental meditation. At one specific point, 12:56, he gives his opinion of The Beatles turning away from Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and his teachings. For George Harrison’s take on the Maharishi, it’s documented in Scorsese’s George Harrison: Living in the Material World. Ultimately, Love’s opinion of The Beatles’ actions is far from favorable.
We’re just starting to scratch the surface of the KTRU music interviews. Expect many more with a wide range of artists in the coming months.
