Memorabilia Monday: Dr. Boles and the Wooden Tubes

Dr. John Boles is a frequent visitor to the Woodson. Not only has he written two books on Rice history, A University So Conceived and University Builder: Edgar Odell Lovett and the Founding of the Rice Institute, he regularly teaches HIST 422, The History of Rice University. One reason he stops by so frequently is for the wooden tube he is holding in the picture above.

Inside the wooden tube is an invitation to the formal opening of the Rice Institute. We have five tubes: one is blank and the others are for the University of Cincinnati (Dr. Boles’ favorite), the University of the South, Pres. Charles William Elliott, and the Iowa State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. We are not exactly sure why we have these. It’s unclear if someone forgot to mail them or if the post office returned them. What does is matter is that we have the invitations and that we get nice visits from Dr. Boles.
